Welcome to the I3L

Collaborate. Innovate. Educate.

Welcome to the Interoperability & Integration Innovation Lab (I3L), a virtual sandbox and physical collaboration locus for Health Information Technology practitioners and thought leaders.  The I3L exists to facilitate education, research and commercialization in support of the Triple Aim*:

  • Improving the patient experience of care, including quality and patient satisfaction;
  • Improving the health of populations; and
  • Reducing the per capita cost of health care.

I3L members are already working on projects that advance safer and higher-value heathcare delivery with an ever-evolving suite of open source and new commercial platforms, applications and toolkits.  These integration proofs-of-concept engineer interoperability in conformance with emerging national standards and adopted guidelines.

The I3L serves members and donors as:

  • An access point to Internet-based applications and resources in the Georgia Tech I3L Health Cloud, and at other universities, consortia and industry members sharing the belief that true platforms and systems interoperability is the most immediate barrier to achieving the Triple Aim;
  • A conformance test bed for and proof-of-concept engineering extension arm for members, significantly reducing both capital cost and time to market with new products or integrations of existing products;
  • A networking and convening site in the Georgia Tech Health IT Showcase, where the I3L Board meets quarterly, project Scopes of Work are designed, and supportive stakeholders from both the public and private sectors meet to create and showcase collaborative product innovations; and
  • A Georgia and regional economic development catalyst through connecting industry to students and research faculty working on some of healthcare’s most challenging technical, policy and practice issues in a neutral environment with “hands-on” learning resources.

Who can benefit from I3L?

*The IHI Triple Aim is a framework developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement that describes an approach to optimizing health system performance. It is IHI’s belief that new designs must be developed to simultaneously pursue three dimensions, together referred to as the “Triple Aim.”
